During Headstart, year 8 3D Art students were given a ‘taster’ class in working with clay. Students were tasked with constructing a slab built planter using a cylinder pipe as a mould and creating a monster face on the outside. After firing the clay, students could paint their ceramics with underglaze to colour it and it was then dipped in a clear gloss and fired for the finished product. This artwork provides the opportunity to learn ceramic making techniques such as slab rolling, score-slip-smooth joining, and hand moulding while building on fine motor skills. Students now understand how the material works which will help inform and plan their sculptures this semester.
