A variety of opportunities for Camps, trips and immersions are available over different year levels. Activities Week at the beginning of May is when each year level has their own camp, excursion or renewal experience. In addition to these Activities Week experiences, the College also has a variety of Trips and Immersions available for students to take part in.
Below is some general information on some of the larger trips that are offered at SJC, have a read and look out for further information from teaching staff when students are eligible to apply!
Ampilatwatja (which is pronounced Um-bludda-witch). This six day experience will involve students flying into and staying in Alice Springs on Sunday night, before a 4-hour drive to Ampilatwatja on Monday. While in the community students will be involved in classroom activities, a football clinic, bush cooking and a community disco. Students will spend the week sharing language, culture and building relationships. We leave the community Friday morning, returning to Alice Springs for a debrief of the trip. Participants will have a chance to reconnect with Ampilatwatja students when they visit our school and the wider Geelong community in the September.
The approximate cost is $1900.
This nine day immersion will spend two nights in Darwin before venturing 220km South West to the Indigenous Community of Nauiyu Nambiyu located on the banks of the mighty Daly River. Students will spend their time immersed in the day to day life of the locals, developing relationships and learning how to live off the land. Three nights are spent living in the community before heading out to camp in the bush, visiting many sacred sights, listening to Dreamtime stories whilst laying under the stars, sampling the vast array of bush tucker and attempting to catch the elusive barramundi.
The approximate cost is $2500.
The nine day trip will involve the students engaging in activities with other students from Xavier College on Bathurst Island, learning about the local culture, and assisting with meals services in Darwin. Students will be expected to take a leading role in these activities and display qualities such as initiative and willingness to help others. There will also be some tourist experiences as part of the itinerary.
The approximate cost is $2500.
An amazing opportunity to complete the Kokoda Track following the 39th Battalion from Kokoda to Owen’s corner in the Owen Stanley Ranges Papua New Guinea.
Coordinated together by staff from SJC along with professional skills of Australian Kokoda Tours, this is an 11 day journey with eight days on the track. It is an a great opportunity to undertake a historical, physical and emotional journey. Participants are required to train, complete practice hikes and hand in a medical.

The 12 day trip will involve the students travelling to Viqueque to spend a week sharing language and culture and building relationships with students in our partner school Viqueque 01. After Viqueque time will be spent on Atauro Island – named the most marine biodiverse area in the world. Students will engage in activities focussed on sustainable and socially responsible development. Upon return to Dili days will be spent visiting local sites of significance to better understand the history and people of Timor Leste. The approximate cost is $3500.
This three week immersion to East Africa is a truly once in a lifetime experience. Staying in the remote village of Mannya, students will build relationships with students; learn how the villages live at their homes; help in the Health Centre; teach and learn in the classroom; play games and activities at the high school, primary school and kindergarten; and join in public singing and dancing performances. Students will also have the unique experience to do a dormitory-stay and home day-stay. The immersion then continues to Nairobi, Kenya where students will visit the Mary Rice Centre and Ruben Centre, both projects over seen by the Christian Brothers. The experience concludes with two nights in Amboseli National Park, which includes a safari – the perfect way to conclude 13-years of schooling.

Take a cultural experience and see the sights of China. Every second year SJC Chinese staff chaperone a tour group around China, visiting tourist attractions and local schools, experiencing and sharing the Chinese culture. The trip will visit places, such as the Great Wall, the Terracotta Warriors, the Forbidden City but the itinerary changes each year with new experiences.

Home to many of the world’s greatest works of art, architecture and gastronomy, Italy was the epicentre of the Roman Empire and birthplace of the Renaissance. Stand in the presence of Michelangelo’s David, slow down and indulge in a little vita all’italiana, and enjoy the Italian countryside; one of nature’s masterpieces. Students will have the opportunity to experience Italian family life with a homestay experience, as well as a tour of some of the most beautiful cities in Italy: Rome, Milan, Florence and Verona. This tour runs every second year. The itinerary changes each year with new experiences.
The College has built a strong connection to the Victorian Young Leaders to China program which has seen groups of St Joseph's students be selected to represent their school in the program. If the College is selected, The Victorian Young Leaders to China (VYL China) program is an award winning, in-country immersion program for Year 9 students and accompanying teachers, which helps to prepare them for living and working in an increasingly interconnected global community.
Combining language and cultural learning with personal development and leadership skills, the program is a potentially life-changing opportunity for students and teachers to experience life and attend school in China.
This overseas immersion for up to six weeks, which includes being hosted by a local school in China, opportunities to improve Chinese language skills, developing friendships with Chinese peers (including student buddies) and undertaking a range of excursions exploring Chinese history and culture.
Year 7 students will experience a camp for three days at Lake Dewar in Bacchus Marsh this camp is usually held in Term 1. These three days are filled with adventure and team building activities such as mountain bike riding, hiking, paddle boarding, kayaking, raft building and for the brave at heart - a giant flying fox which spans the nearby canyon.
Year 9 students will travel to the Grampians for four days of adventure. Students will learn how to setup their own campsites and will participate in a range of adventure activities such as rafting, rock climbing, mountain biking and hiking. This camp option is available for any student who decides not to opt to attend the Ampilatwatja immersion.
