Matteo Bove and Liam Alsop have taken over the Principal’s desk, representing the Student Leadership of the College, to interview Acting Principal Lisa Pope and Acting Deputy Principal John Mitchell on the latest initiatives occurring at the College.

A copy of the questions and responses is provided below.

What has been happening around the College in the past fortnight?

Last week was a busy week, our Year 11 students participated in a Driver’s Education program at Costa Hall and we hosted the Interschool Chess competition on Friday. Our Music students showcased their talent last Thursday night in the Performing Art Centre and the Year 7 students held a languages afternoon inviting their parents into the College to share their work.

We also held our Year 8 Renewals last week, with our students participating in the Courage to Care Upstander Programs which educate about the dangers of racism, prejudice, discrimination and bystander behaviour.

This week our Gospel and Spirituality assembly was a great start to the week, as we celebrate reconciliation week. The Welcome to Country and our guest speaker, Tommy Nyawir, were definite highlights for me.

We understand that there are some changes to the timetable in 2024. A number of our leaders have asked some questions about the timetable and we are hoping you can share this with our community.

Why are there different bell times every day?

There are different bell times each day as we have implemented different lesson lengths to accommodate a range of learning styles. The length of lessons range from 40 minutes, 60 minutes and 90 minutes. The other theory is no day looks the same in the world beyond school, and therefore creating opportunities to vary the way we work each day helps us to adapt to this.

Do we have Wednesdays off?

No, you certainly do not. Students in Years 7 to 11 are expected to be in class. All Year 12 students are expected in class until lunchtime. However, in Year 12 we are offering some flexibility to the following students (and it is by invitation only):

  • Students who have completed a VCE Unit 3-4 in 2023 and have been part of our independent study group on a Wednesday afternoon. These students will be invited to learn from home if they can demonstrate readiness and maturity to do so.
  • Students who are completing an Australian School Based Apprenticeship and it is part of their workday.
  • Students who complete an offsite VETis program which impacts their Wednesday morning.
  • Students who complete a University accelerated subject (online) or Hybrid unit.

Can we have a sample timetable and can it go on Simon on daily messages?

Yes, we can provide a sample of the timetable for Mt Sion students, but we have some finer tweaking of our timetables for Westcourt and Waterford in 2024.

Are start times and finishing times the same?

Yes, our plan for St Joseph’s model keeps a consistent start time of 9.00am and finishes at 3.20pm.

What sparked this change?

This project started before I came to the College and has been in discussions for over three years. It started prior to COVID, and we learnt lessons from this. Part of the reason to change for us was flexibility so many students who want to have a diverse range of options in their subject pathway could do so, including VETis, work placements and accelerated units from university.

The other key driver is the ability to develop self-regulated learners, who can understand how they learn and how they can control their learning environment. The environment is very different in university and TAFE settings as well as the workforce, with less structure and support and therefore we want to support our students to transition to these stages successfully.

What benefits will this have for the students and teachers?

For students in Years 7 to 10, this timetable will provide greater time to English and Mathematics, which we hope will improve our student's literacy and numeracy skills. It enables us to strengthen our connection with Sacred Heart College and offer our students a greater range of subject choices.

For our senior students, we hope it supports students who want to have diverse pathways. We also hope it will improve engagement and increase motivation by studying subjects of genuine interest. We also hope it promotes independent learning, and confidence to tackle learning challenges on their own and ultimately improve outcomes.

Our Year 12 students will have both Monday and Wednesday afternoon to study from home or school unless they have a SAC. This supports our sporting program and enables us to also reduce the need to run redemption SACs outside of school hours.

For teachers, it will challenge us to think about our teaching and how to best utilise the different lesson lengths. It provides greater chunks of preparation time, and teachers will ultimately teach fewer subjects, as we have increased time for most subjects across the school.

In regards to the new Arts & Learning Precinct being built, will any other blocks receive repairs or upgrades in the near future?

Definitely, we have a staged approach to how we can upgrade the facilities of the College such as the D Block classrooms.

I am a student doing a VCE VM course each Wednesday during Periods 5 to 6, will this new timetable structure affect my opportunities going forward?

No, we are hoping that it will help you, by enabling you to participate in more structured workplace learning and offsite activities. If you chose to study a VCE subject as part of your VCE VM, we hope this change will support students better.

How does the school plan to account for nearly 1800 students in light of teaching shortages?

We need to employ more staff and we have recently advertised to do so. We are excited about adding some more team members to our College to help assist us in implementing our new structure.

It has been discussed that we can only study five subjects in Year 12, has that changed and if you wanted to study six VCE subjects, can you do this?

The new timetable has not changed the number of subjects students study in Year 12, currently they have access to study five units and next year this is the same. If students wish to have six units in their ATAR, we highly encourage them to complete one of these units (VCE or VET) prior to Year 12.

We noticed the State government has announced that some private schools will lose their exemption from paying payroll tax. Will this impact St Joseph’s College and therefore our school fees?

St Joseph’s currently sit below the $7,500 threshold level of tuition fees, so at this stage, we shouldn’t lose our payroll tax exemption and therefore this change should not impact fees. By the parameters reported in the State government announcement, we do not fit into the category of a high fee paying school.

What is the current procedure with illness with COVID?

The College currently has a number of staff and students with COVID and also the flu. We are asking anyone with flu like symptoms to follow the recommended guidelines:

  • Test using RATS for COVID if you have symptoms, no matter how mild.
  • Test if you are household or social close contact.

Note: students and staff who report a positive COVID test result are recommended to isolate for a minimum of five days and not attend school until their symptoms have resolved.

Is there anything coming up in the next few weeks that we need to highlight to our community?

  • This week is Year 10 Careers Week and our Careers Coordinator has been busy preparing activities for our students including Morrisby testing to help guide our students to think about life beyond the College.
  • The GAT is on Thursday 15 June for all students who are completing Year 12 VCE or VCE VM and any student studying a Unit 3-4 VCE sequence (this day is a student free day for all other students).
  • It is also important to remind our parents and students that Semester 1 exams for students in Years 8 to 11 will occur in the last week of term.
  • The last day of term will be Thursday 22 June and reports will be released to parents and students on the first Monday of the holidays.

As we move further into the term, we've been encouraged to see the continued enthusiasm, engagement, and progress of our students across various areas of their education at St Joseph's College. Let's take a moment to highlight some recent events and upcoming programs in our learning community.

Our Year 7 language students recently held a mini expo, a unique opportunity to showcase their accomplishments and talents cultivated in their language classes. Parents were invited on-site to experience the event, adding a touch of excitement and a hint of pride to each classroom. The expo was not only a testament to the students' dedication to their language study, but also a powerful demonstration of their abilities to communicate in a different language.

Last week, our music students put on a remarkable show at the Term 2 Music Concert. They performed to a packed house, delighting the audience with a range of musical pieces. The dedication and hard work of all participating bands were clearly on display, leading to many outstanding performances. A special mention goes out to our first-time performers. Their courage was greatly admired. This event affirmed St Joseph's commitment to the arts, fostering a strong and vibrant culture within our community. A huge thank you goes to all of our music staff for the work they do in guiding our students.

Coming up this week, we kickstart our Year 10 careers program. Students will engage in a series of careers sessions, designed to inform and enthuse them about the range of future pathways available. These sessions are not only critical to exposing our students to a world of opportunities, but they also encourage thoughtful consideration of their future. The careers week program is a precursor to the subject selection process for Term 3, providing students with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions about their subjects and pathways. More details about subject selections will be shared soon.

As always, we encourage parents to remain engaged with their child's educational journey, lending support and encouragement as they explore new subjects, delve into their passions, and plan for their future. Regular discussions about school experiences and learnings can help deepen your understanding of your child's academic journey, thus enabling you to provide the right kind of support when needed. Together, we can continue to foster a nurturing and inspiring environment, equipping our students with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in their future endeavours.

Year 8 Courage to Care Renewal Days

Acting with compassion and knowing the importance of being an upstander are values that St Joseph’s College always drives home to our young people. To compliment the Year 8 Religious Education focus this term, we excitedly welcomed back Courage to Care, an upstander program that educates on how to counter the dangers of racism, prejudice, discrimination and bullying. This program is the highlight of the Year 8 Renewals, and one that is so powerful it leaves a long-lasting impression on our boys.

The program is delivered by a team of skilled and dedicated volunteers that features inspiring testimonies from Holocaust survivor speakers, promotes acceptance of diversity within our community, transforms bystander behaviour, and inspires us to become upstanders.

The Renewals also featured a seminar on respectful relationships, an interactive session about the importance of faith dialogue and a calming mindfulness experience inspired by the Resilience Project.

Below are a few of the Year 8s testimonies about their Renewal experience:

Earlier this week, the Year 8 students participated in the Renewal Program for 2023. The renewal had a range of activities including a presentation regarding respectful relationships from Mr. Kennedy. A presentation on different religions and how important religion is to people, and how we should embrace it from Ms. Milverton. We also got some time out of the day to calm down and relax with some meditation with Ms. McKew in the chapel.

An amazing experience we had was with two special guest speakers Henry Eckert and Peter Bartra, who are Holocaust survivors from World War 2. They came to talk to us and share their remarkable stories on how they survived such a terrible time, Henry said that he lived 2 lives, his first life was in the War and his second life was in Australia. At one time Henry spent six weeks hiding in a cupboard when the Nazis were in town looking for Jews. One time he was playing with a younger boy in the street and a man in a uniform with big black boots came and his father always told him that if he had a “uniform and black boot run, run quicker than you ever have before”. So, Henry ran for his life and lost the Nazi but as he looked over the young child who he was playing with wasn’t so lucky.
Year 8 Student, Max Burn

I learnt to treat other people how they want to be treated.

I am grateful for getting to learn about other religions and to get to know about how even different religious leaders get along.

I learnt how hard it is to survive as a Jew during the Holocaust.

A challenge was how hard it was to believe that people actually did those things.

to people.

Learning this will help us to stand up for others.

Make sure things like the Holocaust never happen again.

I learnt how mindfulness can help your mental health.

We can all be upstanders and make a difference.

Justice and Solidarity Assembly

Reconciliation Week ‘A Voice for Future Generations’

Our Justice and Solidarity Assembly launched Reconciliation Week with a Welcome to Country by Nikki McKenzie and Norm Stanley, joined by our First Nations Captains Oliver Anderson. St Joseph’s College has a strong Reconciliation Action Plan and in playing our part, we collectively create a culturally safe environment where we can build relationships and communities that value First Nations peoples, histories, cultures, and futures. The theme for National Reconciliation Week 2023, Be a Voice for Generations, encourages all Australians to be a voice for reconciliation in tangible ways.

Students joined in the variety of activities taking place across the week including, a Homeroom Kahoot challenge for staff and students to broaden their knowledge of Wadawurrung Country, the Kulin Nation and Reconciliation. Library activities across the week including a collaborative Reconciliation artwork. FIRE Carriers and First Nations Students came together for a Reconciliation Week lunch. And during the week, there has been be a Wadawurrung Country display in the college staffroom which included many digital classroom resources created by one of our year 10 History classes.

The Reconciliation Trophy Match St Joseph’s College vs St Bernard’s took place at Queens Park on Wednesday. As part of the Edmund Rice Education Australia network of schools our colleges are called to show a commitment to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education. The Reconciliation Trophy was initiated in 2013 to provide the students of St Bernard’s and St Joseph’s with an ongoing method of expressing this commitment.

Specifically, designed team jumpers are created for the round, featuring Indigenous art representing the stories and culture of Indigenous groups around Australia. The jumpers are designed by Reana Bono from the Victorian Aboriginal Child Care Agency, and contain stylised figures around the side of the jumper with the base representative of the players.

To conclude our Justice and Solidarity assembly, our College Drum Line welcomed our guest speakers Tommy Nyawir along with Jason Bongers from Edmund Rice Australia. Tommy and his wife Judy founded Mirror of Hope, a Women's Empowerment Program, changing lives in Kibera by equipping women with business-skills training and support. We opened our hearts and minds to listen to Tommy’s journey and profound insights, which we hope will leave a lasting impression, igniting a passion for justice and solidarity within each of us.

Music department news

These past few weeks have been very productive and exciting in the music department. 11 May saw us visit Kardinia International College with our intermediate band for the annual Geelong Region Combined Bands Day. More than 40 SJC students were involved in this event where they were privileged to work with Dr Jemima Bunn on two pieces for the combined band. 206 young musicians were involved all up and they made a mighty sound together! Thanks to all the students and teachers involved with what was a very successful and exciting day of music making for all involved.

18 May was an exceptionally musical day for SJC students. Starting with our saxophone and guitar ensembles performing at the Probus Geelong 30th anniversary lunch at Barwon Edge. A special thanks to the students involved and Mr Cassidy and Mr Adam Wilkie for preparing the students for this performance and supporting them at this performance. Later that same day, our Autumn concert involved all the college ensembles. Each ensemble showcased a diverse range of music that they had been rehearsing during the term. Drumline opened the show with great excitement and created a wonderful sense of expectation for the rest of the evening. This was the Junior Academy Band’s debut public performance after approximately one full term worth of lessons and rehearsals and what a debut it was! It was exciting to hear the future of the SJC music program coming from this group. We were able to present the Mathew Shelley award for commitment and dedication to the music program to 2022 Alumni, Elijah Van Galen and it was wonderful to have Elijah back at this concert as a guest.

Upcoming events include 7 June Class Act concert at 6pm in the PAC which involves all year 7 band classes and year 8 band classes showcasing what they have learnt this semester. Unit 3 VCE music recitals will happen in week 8.

Term 3 has plenty of musical events in the works, including the Senior and Stage band tour to Phillip Island, Royal South Street competition, Victorian Schools Music Festival and finishing off with the Arts Hall of Fame Launch.

Stay tuned for more exciting music news to come!

ACC Sport Week 6
Article by Chris Lynch
Director of Staff and Operations

In the final week of the home and away season for most of the football and soccer teams, St Joseph's secured some valuable victories ahead of the finals next week.

The 1st XVIII Football team took centre stage with an outstanding performance in the Reconciliation Trophy Match against St Bernard's Essendon. St Joseph's left their opponents in the dust, securing an impressive victory with a score of 20.16 (136) to 4.1 (25). The star of the match was Patrick Hughes, who dominated the game by scoring a remarkable nine goals. Declan Foley and Michael Rudd also made notable contributions, adding three and two goals respectively. The standout players included Hughes, Flynn Chirgwin, Rudd, Ethan Borys, Angus Morrison, Jesse Mellor, Lachlan Jaques, and Cooper Patton. With this win, St Joseph's finished third on the ladder and will enjoy a well-deserved week off before the Semi Final against St Bede's.

In Year 10 Football, St Joseph's faced a tough challenge against Parade Bundoora, both teams going into the game undefeated. Although they put up a valiant effort, they were ultimately defeated by 33-points in blustery conditions. Hugo Walsh and Eamon Roberts provided a glimmer of hope scoring two goals each, whilst Thomas Handley, Jordie Stone, Walsh, and Tyson Roberts were recognized as the team's best players. Despite the loss, St Joseph's secured second place on the ladder and will now gear up for a home Semi Final clash against Whitefriars Donvale next week.

The Year 9 Red Football team engaged in an intense battle against Parade Bundoora and emerged victorious with a final score of 11.7 (73) to 9.8 (62). Despite conceding 5-unanswered goals in the last quarter, St Joseph's displayed great teamwork, with multiple players contributing to the goal tally earlier in the match. Harry Lever, William Hibble, and Ryder Warry stood out by scoring two goals each, whilst Jack Pickett, Darcy Harrington, Tom Clark, and Hibble were praised for their exceptional performances. Finishing third on the ladder, St Joseph's will now face an away Semi Final against Whitefriars Donvale in the coming week.

Similar success was observed in the Year 9 Yellow Football team, where St Joseph's secured a resounding 84-point victory over Parade Bundoora. Koby Bajada, Will Skabla, and Jake Findlay led the charge by contributing two goals each to the team's triumph. Rupert Flanders, Billy King, Bajada, and Skabla were hailed as the standout players. With their third-place finish on the ladder, St Joseph's will face an away Semi Final against Whitefriars Donvale next week.

In soccer action, the 1st XI Soccer team faced a tough challenge against St Bede's Mentone, succumbing to a heavy 12-1 defeat. Harry Hardy managed to find the back of the net for St Joseph's lone goal. Jack McTaggart, Jude Coverdale, Yuriy Tychenok, and Akolde Lueth showcased their skills and were recognized as the team's top performers. The team now prepares for their final match of the season next week at St Bernard's College.

The Year 10 Soccer team encountered a close battle against St Bernard's Essendon, falling short in a 4-3 loss. Alexander Giorgio, Patrick Wall, and Lachlan Whitelaw were the goal scorers whilst Giorgio, Luke Siketa, and Liam Paterson demonstrated their abilities and were acknowledged as the team's best players. With a second-place finish on the ladder, St Joseph's will now host a Semi Final showdown against St Bernard's again next week.

Unfortunately, the Year 9 Soccer team faced a disappointing result, failing to secure a victory against Mazenod Mulgrave with a final score of 0-3. This loss prevented them from advancing to the finals.

VITA Sailing Excursion

On Friday 26 May, Mt Sion students in the VITA program participated in a sailing excursion day through the Winds of Joy program. This program is an inclusive, safe space, designed to give young people with disability and disadvantage an empowering and uplifting experience on-water. While the wind was too choppy to put the sails up, students enjoyed time on the yacht out in Corio bay and engaged with the crew from Making Waves Foundation. They learnt about wind direction and changes, channels, rules on the water and all aspects of our yacht. Students encouraged each other with the various challenges that they were presented with throughout the day, which included taking over the control of the yacht at the helm. The camaraderie shown amongst the group was commendable and we are proud of how well they represented St Joseph’s.

ACC Sport Week 5

Director of Staff and Operations

It was an eventful week for St Joseph's football and soccer teams, with exhilarating victories, tough challenges, and standout performances on the field.

The 1st XVIII Football team put on a remarkable performance, securing a spirited 34-point runaway victory against long-time rival Whitefriars at Queens Park. Despite facing a strong wind in the first quarter and being 19 points down at quarter time, the boys turned the game around from then on. They fought hard and managed to take a 13-point lead by three-quarter time after a Jesse Mellor goal after the siren. The victory was sealed later in the last quarter with a superb goal by Ethan Borys sending the crowd into ruptures. Standout players in the game included Ethan Borys, Lachlan Jaques, Nicholas Dowling, and Sol Bowtell.

It was a challenging day for the 1st XI Soccer team as they faced Salesian College in Chadstone. They conceded six second-half goals, resulting in a disappointing 9-nil loss. Despite the tough outcome, players such as Seth Sutherland, Jack McTaggart, Jacob Owen, and Alex Mrak put in a valiant effort during the match.

The Year 10 Football team displayed their dominance with a commanding win over St Bernard's. They ran out as 116-point victors, even though the last quarter was cut short, lasting only 10 minutes. The team showcased their strength and depth with 14 individual goal kickers contributing to the win. Lenny Allen, Thomas Handley, Wichay Paul, and Tyson Roberts continued their impressive form throughout the season.

A goal fest unfolded on Carey Oval as the Year 10 Soccer team engaged in an exciting match. They secured a thrilling 7-5 victory, with both teams displaying excellent attacking prowess. Patrick Wall stood out with a hat-trick, while Gianluca Sozzi scored two goals. Lachy Whitelaw and Alex Giorgio also made valuable contributions to the scoreboard. Notable performances from Paddy Heffernan, Tobias Servin, and Luke Sikita ensured a well-deserved win.

The Year 9 Red Football team started their game against St Bernard's College with a bang, scoring four unanswered goals in the first quarter. They maintained their dominance throughout the match, ultimately winning by 58-points. William Hibble played a starring role with three goals, while Darcy Harrington, Jack Pickett, Charlie Gray, and Tom Teague were recognized as the standout players on the day.

In a closely contested game, the Year 9 Yellow Football team experienced a narrow 4-point loss to St Bernard's. Despite this, the team showcased great potential with eight players representing the College for the first time. Tom Clark's outstanding performance which included three goals, earned him the best on-ground recognition. George O'Dwyer, Jack Kelly, Lenny Honner, and Rupert Flanders also displayed impressive skills during the game.

The Year 9 Soccer team faced a challenging opponent in the Manchester City aligned Parade College in Bundoora. Although they suffered a 6-0 loss, our players showed resilience and fought hard until the final whistle. Jake Bailey, Karl Leban, and Mason Jager were acknowledged as the team's best players, despite the result.

Overall, it was an action-packed week for St Joseph's in the ACC sports competition. Our teams demonstrated determination, skill, and sportsmanship in their respective matches. Apart from the 1st XI Soccer, next week is the last home and away fixture for each team as they hope to secure a finals birth.

Parents and Friends

Thank you to the 121 Trivians who battled it out at the SJC P&F Trivia night on Friday.

Our Trivia Master, Simon, took us on a trivia journey that some of us flew through with ease, some sang and danced their way through the answers and others came purely to socialise and eat. The top 10 swapped and changed through the night, though the winning team, (put in team name), came through with the win, just beating (team name) by half a point!

Together, everyone helped raise over $4500 to go towards supporting The Man Cave incursion for our Year 10 students in Term 3. Thank you to the P&F for all of their support and help on the night.

The next event on the P&F Social Calendar is another annual event, The Comedy Night on Friday 4 August in the SJC PAC. We are in the process of locking in some of the funniest comedians and bringing them to Geelong to entertain you all. Keep an eye on the socials and the newsletter for updates. Ticket sales are open now for those who love a good Comedy show and want to make sure they are guaranteed a seat.

https://www.trybooking.com/CIPPW

Our next P&F meeting is on Tuesday 13 June on the Staffroom from 7pm. Everyone is welcome to attend please send through an email to Jodie Warrick [email protected]. We will be discussing our major fundraiser for the year, the annual SJC Fashion Dinner. If this is something you would like to be a part of, please come along and join in with the team that make this night such a huge success for the Kensekka community.

Thank you to all of our parents who are part of the SJC P&F and to those who support all of the events they plan and the things that they do for our school and the SJC community.

Year 7 Languages Mini-Expo

We are thrilled to share the success of our recent Languages Mini-Expo, which took place on Thursday, 25 May. The event was a resounding triumph, thanks to the exceptional efforts and achievements of our talented Year 7 Language students.

The Languages Mini-Expo provided a platform for our young linguists to showcase their language skills and cultural knowledge. Through engaging exhibitions, captivating performances, and interactive language demonstrations, our Year 7 students astounded the audience with their dedication and passion for language learning. We are immensely proud of their accomplishments and the progress they have made throughout the year.

We would also like to express our gratitude to the parents and guardians who attended the Languages Mini-Expo. Your presence and support played a crucial role in creating a vibrant and encouraging atmosphere for our students. It was truly heart-warming to witness the strong connection between our school community and the shared enthusiasm for language learning. By fostering an appreciation for languages and cultural diversity, we are equipping our students with essential skills for success in an increasingly globalized world.

If you were unable to attend the Languages Mini-Expo, we encourage you to engage with your child about their experience, explore their language projects together, and discuss the importance of language learning. Your interest and support will continue to motivate and inspire their language journey.

Geelong-Viqueque Friendship Schools

St Joseph’s College continues to support the Geelong-Viqueque Friendship Schools and recently, SJC students attended the annual Fundraising Dinner to celebrate the wonderful work of our community members and partner schools. This year, guest speaker Andrew Mahar (AM) Honorary Consul General of Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste shared the initiative of “With One Seed” – replenishing the planet program. His messages of social justice, environmental justice and economic justice were embraced by the students and community members in attendance.

Year 9 Commbank Small Business Expo
Article by Annalee McKew
Year 9 Teaching Staff

Our Year 9 Entrepreneur students attended Australia’s largest Small Business Expo at Marvel Stadium in Melbourne on the 25 May. Hosted by the CommBank, students met face to face with passionate business owners. It was the ideal opportunity to connect, learn, and even pitch their own business ideas to other entrepreneurs. Students also heard from key industry experts in the marketing field. They gained valuable insights into brand awareness and how to market a business. This provided inspiration for how they will market their own business ideas at our upcoming Westcourt Expo at the end of the term.

The Resilience Project

The Resilience Project

This week’s presentation fromThe Resilience Project focuses on Gratitude.

Gratitude is paying attention to the things that we have right now, and not worrying about what we don’t have. We practise this by noticing the positives that exist around us.

Research shows that practicing gratitude rewires our brains to overcome the negativity bias (which can lead to anxiety and depression) and see the world for what we are thankful for. It is also shown to broaden thinking, and increase physical health through improved sleep and attitude to exercise.

There are many ways in which you can practise gratitude, including starting a gratitude journal. You can simply use a notebook to list three things that went well for you each day, or use a more comprehensiveWellbeing Journal, like those created by The Resilience Project.

Year 10 History - The Holocaust
Article by Scott Harris
Senior English and History

Extensive names and exhaustive numbers.

Educating students about The Holocaust affords many challenges for modern teachers as we attempt to make sense of something that is visceral and emotive but perhaps all too often overshadowed by numbers that are in some ways too incomprehensible to fathom let alone explain to young minds.

It is without question that an awareness of history is an essential characteristic of any society, and historical knowledge is fundamental to understanding ourselves and others. It allows us the chance to look inward and appreciate the world around us, explain or debate how we have evolved and it grants us a chance to understand human experience.

In combining the challenge with the purpose, the Year 10 History students of St. Joseph’s College, Geelong are undergoing their Term Two focus on Holocaust Education. Their task was to uncover the unique story of a Holocaust victim and bring it to light, thus humanising them in direct opposition to the ideals of the Nazi regime. The notion of commemorating the life of one person is the inverse of attempting to understand six million and it bestows an opportunity to discuss the significance of life and the horrors of The Final Solution. It challenges students to see past numbers and rather than recite facts… really ‘feel’ history- connect on a human level with the past. In utilising this empathy, students are given the chance to speak truth and tell the story of a victim, breathing life into the past.

To assist with the learning, students had the opportunity to visit the new Melbourne Holocaust Museum in Elsternwick. Whilst there, they closely worked with Simon Holloway and his team unpacking historical sources. Additionally, they met in-person a Holocaust Survivor- Irma Hanner and they listened to her harrowing tale of survival and hope. Her message was inspirational and highlighted the need for tolerance today.

Our community links here at St. Joseph’s College continue to grow as we welcomed Yael Eaglstein from Yad Vashem International Holocaust Education in Israel. She was able to run a class session on ‘Life in the Warsaw Ghetto’. Her insights were really valuable as the students utilised her resources and expertise. This will later feature in St. Joseph’s College Holocaust Education Week presented in Week 5. This affords an opportunity for teachers to look at their application and instruction across a number of year levels and subjects.
