This Monday we begin our ‘Headstart’ program with each year level commencing in their new 2021 year level, classes and subjects. The rationale behind the program is that it promotes higher levels of student engagement in the final days of the school year, ensures meaningful work is undertaken rather than ‘winding down’ activities and it allows us to make any timetable adjustments. In a normal year we would have two weeks of headstart however this year it is shortened to allow additional time for classes to complete 2020 work requirements. On Monday it is really 2021 in each class and I encourage all students to take the opportunity to start the year on a positive note.

This week we held our Waterford and Westcourt Award Ceremonies. Award winners are acknowledged elsewhere in this newsletter but on behalf of the College community I would like to congratulate all these who have excelled this year. I make particular mention of the winner of the Principal’s Award at each year level Callum Wiggett at Year 7, Michael Ahern at Year 8 and Jaeger Fawcett at Year 9.

In recent weeks I read a book called ‘Humankind – a Hopeful History’ by Rutger Bregman. Its central premise is that human beings are inherently good, kind and trustworthy, not nasty, untrustworthy and selfish (as most news reporting would have us believe). Bregman suggests that life should be in communal, rich, joyful and altruistic, not ‘solitary, poor, nasty, brutish and short’ as philosopher Thomas Hobbes believes.

The book suggests that we are programmed to think the worst of everyone else by an endless diet of disaster and tragedy fed to us in our news. This resonated with me. We tend to assume that if we leave a bag, bike or car unlocked or unguarded it will be stolen… the vast majority of the time it won’t! We drive our children to school or to the bus stop so they won’t be kidnapped or run over… the likelihood of either is miniscule! We insist our children have phones to ring us when there is an emergency… there almost certainly won’t be.

This week I took a call from an elderly lady who wanted to tell the school how delighted she was that two boys had spent half a day cleaning her overgrown garden. “Better than professional gardeners, they worked so hard and they were so polite” she reported! The boys were Connor Azzopardi and Jacob Hill who were doing it as part of the St Joseph’s community service program. It is gratifying to see the essential goodness of human beings demonstrated to so many in the community by our boys. Congratulations and thank you to all boys on their commitment to completing your community service.

While community service is a wonderful way to show the best of our human nature locally, the St Joseph’s community also has a proud history of supporting the provision of education for the poor of Kensekka in Uganda. You may have seen an email explaining that an appeal is running until Friday 4 December to assist this to continue. The email includes further detail and a link should you be in a position to provide support.

As we come close to Christmas and our celebration of Christ’s entry into the world, I’d like to share with you a beautiful prayer / reflection from theologian Karl Rahner:

God’s message to us is the source of our joy and our hope:

I am here. I am with you.

I am your life.

I am your time.

My love is unconquerable.

I am here.

It is Christmas.

Light the Candles!

They have more right to exist

than all the darkness.

It is Christmas –

Christmas that lasts forever.

Stay well and God bless.

Identity News
Article by Mary Malone
Acting Director of Identity

In our recent Year 8 Wellbeing project, we have been exploring ways to build resilience. Our focus has been what others are doing to care for our world and their own wellbeing. We invited guest student speakers Oscar Fraatz (Year 10) and Alex Doorakkers (Year 11), to share their experience being involved in the St Joseph’s College Toilet Project and to share how the positive quotes and messages are inspiring resilience for our students. They emphasised how local artist Jai Allen worked with them to create a clean, fresh safe space that would be an ongoing reminder to keep our physical and mental wellbeing in check. They explained the QR codes were another way to help seek contacts when needed. To follow on we watched some recorded messages from our Old Collegians who offered positive voices of encouragement and resilience. Mark Beretta (SJOC 1983), Cameron Ling (SJOC 1998) and Sam Walsh (SJOC 2018).

Our take away messages were:

Have positive thoughts

Have a sense of control

Look after yourself; eat well, exercise, drink water

Walk away to avoid conflict

Seek support

Talk to others

Be grateful

To show their gratitude to the our guest speakers the students worked in pairs to create a ‘Word Art’ image to capture all the words we had explored in relation to resilience and our class captains sent them in an email of thanks.

The Real Christmas Spirit 2020

As we enter the first week of Advent on our Church calendar, this year we have a stronger than ever understanding of waiting in hope. As a school community, our faith has been tested, but remained strong, as we have focused on the reflections of Advent across our last four weeks of our time together after a monumental year, as we await the newborn Christ of hope.

Advent is a countdown. We see shopping centres, television advertisements and supermarkets reminding us how many shopping days until Christmas. Children count down until the great day of ‘presents’ dawns. Many of us this year have been desperately counting down the days until we can meet with our loved ones as restrictions are lifted, the ring of steel dropped and boarders open. We as Christians prepare to light the first candle in hope for Christmas by counting down the weeks until we celebrate the birth of Christ.

As light comes to us from the second Advent candle, we asked for the blessing of God’s Son, Jesus, to be with us, warming our hearts and brightening our way. During this Advent Season, this candle is a beacon of peace as we prepare for the coming light of Christ, who brings forgiveness and much needed healing to our world.

We lit the third Advent Candle as a sign of joy, a testimony to the Light of God coming into our world after awakening from our COVID fog of 2020, shattering the darkness and bringing healing to all who suffer and mourn.

As we light the fourth Advent Candle of love God, we thank you for the joy you bring us. Help us prepare our hearts for this gift. Bless us and help us to hear and to do your word. God of dreams, your servants Mary and Joseph dared to trust in your power and welcomed your Word who dwelt among us as an infant. May their example encourage us to expand our hearts to embrace Christ in the simplicity of family, the poor, the lonely and the sick. May our celebration of Christmas one of gratefulness for the gifts that we are to each other.

May God bless us and embrace our St Joseph’s Community, sending us forth into 2021 with a spirit of love.

Movember Pizzas!
Article by Cassandra Coogan

The Brophy B boys were happy to enjoy their final well-being session in the kitchen. They baked their individual letters, then used them to spell out the importance of Movember at SJC!

Well done boys on a great job raising awareness for this worthy cause!!!

Cross Curricular Culinary Creations
Article by John Harmon

There were some delightful aromas emanating from the Westcourt food tech room this week as the Kitchen Garden boys brought their gardening handiwork first to the chopping board and ultimately the saucepan to produce a spectacular main course of handmade pasta with garden ingredients such as garlic, onion and herbs. Meanwhile, students from the Italian class were busily preparing a delicious Tirimasu for dessert. Mmmm, buonissimo!

Year 9/10 Grampians Camp - the experience of Old Boys'
Article by Simon Taylor

Grampians Camps for students at St Joseph's, commenced in 1986 and they are still running today in 2020!

The inspiration for these camps came from my own experience at Deakin University, when I participated in a similar camp during my teacher training. Lecturer, Lindsay Fitzclarence, was responsible for this teacher training opportunity in the Grampians, and when we started our own camps, Lindsay attended our first camp and assisted in the planning.

Now, some 35 years later, Lindsay is doing a study on the impact of recreational experiences on young people. I recently met up with him and I shared the evolution of our Grampians’ camp from its embryonic stage when he was first involved, to the time up to where we were taking 200+ students in 12 separate groups, accompanied by 28 staff over a 7 day period.

Lindsay is interested in finding out and hearing about stories of how this camp may have influenced some of the 4000+ students who have been part of it over this 35-year period.

If you have the time, could you please respond to the attached survey of six questions.

School Photos 2020
Article by John Mitchell

Arthur Reed Photos are in the process of finalising the school photos. Our homeroom teachers have provided all students with a flier which outlines how to register with Arthur Reed, which many families have done so already. Those that have registered with Arthur Reed Photos will be notified once the photos are ready and available to order. All orders will be processed by Arthur Reed Photos and will be posted directly to families. The College will not be handling any photos this year.

If your son has not received the flier, lost the flier in the bottom of a school bag, or accidentally made a paper aeroplane out of it, feel free to contact the team at Arthur Reed Photos on 5243 4390.

St Joseph's Newest Applied Learning Initiative Launched!
Article by Peter Adams

St Joseph's newest applied learning initiative, 'St Mow-esph's' was launched on Tuesday 24 November!

The program involves VCAL students grabbing their hi-vis, PPE, gardening tools and heading out into the St Joseph’s community to assist the St Joseph's Old Collegians in need of a hand in the garden.

Julie Cole, Fundraising & Alumni Coordinator, made contact with Barry Hill (SJOC 1950), who was the first Old Collegian to receive a nature strip blitz. Barry was very grateful and appreciative of the service.

The program allows current students to pay respect and say thank you to those who have laid the foundation of the current St Joseph's tradition and culture of helping the most vulnerable.

VCAL will be running this service throughout 2021 If you know of any past students like Barry in the Geelong region who would appreciate a backyard blitz please contact [email protected] to arrange a time and date.

Share the Dignity Drive
Article by Leah Irving
Service Learning Coordinator

Our Identity Team is leading the College’s participation in Share The Dignity's 'It's In The Bag' campaign, and are delighted at our community's response. Thank you so much to those who have made a donation. There is still time to get involved. In order to allow us to pack and prepare the bags for the campaign, the donation cart will close on Thursday 10 December.

Share The Dignity is a women’s charity that makes a real, on-the-ground difference to women experiencing homelessness and hardship. Sadly, the increase of women in need in our local community has grown significantly in 2020 - the fastest growing demographic in homelessness is women aged 55+.

Students donate a handbag filled with the “essential items” & any extras & complete Service Learning Form to receive 3 House points & 3 Hours credit.

Drop off locations: Westcourt – staff room, Edmund Rice Campus – staffroom & Service Learning office.

Staff & community members are also encouraged to donate.

The essentials include toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, hygiene products (any kind - pads, tampons, menstrual cups or period underwear), deodorant and soap, all things that we might take for granted.

Often the handbags also include little 'luxuries' such as hand cream, sunscreen, nail polish, socks or even a gift voucher for a cup of coffee. Sometimes, the handbags include notes of encouragement to the recipient.

o All toiletries must be new and unopened.

If you choose to make up a full bag yourself, you also have the option of creating a 'focused' pack, for example, a bag with items suitable for a teenage girl, or a more mature woman. For the teenage bag, please tie a yellow ribbon to the handle so that it is easier to identify. For a mature woman, you may wish to include incontinence products.

Mum bags: maternity pads, newborn nappies, baby wipes, breast pads, dummies, nappy rash cream, disposable nappy bags, baby shampoo and baby wash. If you make up a full nappy bag, it should also include the essentials listed above and have a purple ribbon attached.

Geelong Athlete Centre - Scholarship Opportunity for 2021 Year 10 Students

Geelong Athlete Centre Scholarship Opportunity for 2021 Year 10 students.

Over the remote learning period the SJC community was lucky enough to have enlisted the support of Brianna and David Morgan from the Geelong Athlete Centre to run our Training Tuesday’s LIVE sessions. These sessions were really well received and the feedback from both staff, students and parents who had participated was overwhelmingly positive.

David, an old boy of SJC, and Brianna previously attending Sacred Heart, wanted to be able to give back to their secondary schools and have generously offered up 4x 12 week scholarships over the period of 2021 to our year 10 students.

The scholarships would include:

- Initial Physical Performance Assessment. (This includes movement assessment as well as testing on our high tech Force Plates)

Following the completion of the Assessment and review of a needs analysis questionnaire we write up a program to suit the individual needs of the student in accordance with the sport/s they play and lifestyle.

- 2x 1 on 1 sessions with one of us in the first week to go through the program individually.

- And then twice weekly for 11 weeks access to do the individual program in one of our small group sessions, 1 coach to no more than 5 Athletes, (classes run before or after school)

- Constant support from us throughout the 12 week program

- 1x GAC Training T Shirt or Singlet

DIGITAL APPLICATION FORMS HAVE BEEN EMAILED TO ALL CURRENT YEAR 9 STUDENTS and are due by 4 DECEMBER.

I wanted to give you a little more information about our highly experienced PT’s and what they can offer our young men at their Gym.

Brianna and David Morgan co-founded Geelong Athlete Centre and it has been the couple’s combined love of sport and coaching that helped the concept to materialise.

“We believe that all athletes, junior, weekend warrior, elite or injured should have the opportunity to train in an elite performance facility with elite coaching, testing and programming to support their sporting goals and performance.”

"Too many athletes are going down the route of joining group fitness classes at gyms designed for general health and fitness. There is a big difference between training for general fitness and training for sports performance. The process of preparing an athlete for their sport involves an in depth knowledge and application of sport science."

This is why Brianna has spent over six years at university studying her craft. With a Masters in High Performance Sport, an Honours in Human Movement and Bachelor degrees in Sport & Exercise Science and Sport Management, she has an in depth knowledge of how to prepare an athlete for high performance. She also has worked at elite organisations such as the VIS and the Geelong Football Club as a sport scientist. Bri has a passion for mastering her craft and maintaining coaching excellence and continues to up-skill with industry courses, is mentored by some of the country's esteemed S&C coaches and attends industry conferences to keep in line with current practice.

David is a proud ex St Joseph’s College student. St Joseph’s has been a center of influence for David not only through his school years, but also through his involvements with the St. Joseph’s Cricket and Football clubs as a player and coach. He is passionate about helping young people reach their potential and this has been evident through his coaching both in junior and senior cricket and football and most recently his work as an assistant and development coach with the Geelong Cats AFLW program.

David and Brianna have over 20 years combined experience and love nothing more than helping athletes achieve their goals, transform their bodies and perform to their best.
