The smooth start to the year is being threatened by the number of students and staff absent due either to COVID infection or exposure to positive cases. At this stage face-to-face teaching and learning has continued relatively unaffected but we have to put additional measures in place to ensure that this continues. I’d like to thank and acknowledge everyone for their cooperation in doing all that we can to keep face to face teaching operating and keep everyone safe. So far this year we have been able to run all scheduled events, albeit in slightly changed formats, and I hope you have had the chance to experience some of them either in person or remotely.

The College Advisory Council held the first meeting of the year last week at which new members Tim Bradley and Andrew Penton were welcomed. The meeting was also joined by our senior Student Leaders who outlined their goals for the year. Student voice is an important part of our culture and it was terrific to hear from these outstanding young men. Following the meeting, members of the Josephines, the Mens Association, the Foundation, the Old Collegian’s Association, the Parents and Friends and the Finance and Planning Committee gathered and were welcomed by incoming Council Chairperson Shona Eland.

Late last year work commenced on the development of an updated strategic plan for the College. To this point the College Advisory Council, the College Leadership Team and the staff have had the opportunity for input. Students will also be asked to contribute in the coming weeks. Parents are invited to a gathering (face-to-face or remote to be confirmed) on the evening of Tuesday 5 April to provide input to the strategic direction of the College.

In the coming weeks we commence the first of 10 Open Days which are an opportunity for families considering enrolment at St Joseph’s to visit the school during a normal school day. A few years ago almost all of our year seven enrolments came from Catholic primary schools in the region and there was very little capacity to offer places to students from government or independent primary schools. Next year we expect to have the capacity to offer places to many more students outside the Catholic primary system, something that fits well with our commitment to inclusivity.

The St Joseph’s community continues to be a beacon of hope for many both inside and outside our College community. I recently received a letter from the Edmund Rice Foundation Australia as follows:

“We very gratefully acknowledged receipt of $101,380.00 as a result of the parent contributions to the Edmund Rice Foundation. This was another outstanding result from St Joseph’s parents and supporters. On behalf of the recipients of your generosity, we thank all those at St Joseph’s for this contribution to the work for the struggling of the world.

This donation comes directly from families who choose to pay the $80 voluntary levy when school fees are paid and supports the work of the Foundation in the developing world, particularly in East Africa. In addition to our ongoing commitment to St Joseph’s vocational secondary College in Kensekka this result speaks volumes for the generosity of our community.

The importance of inclusivity in our enrolments and our support for those in need is emphasised by Pope Francis who reminds us: “The world exists for everyone because all of us were born with the same dignity. Differences of colour, religion, talent, place of birth or residence and so many others cannot be used to justify the privileges of some over the rights of all. As a community we have an obligation to ensure that every person lives with dignity and has sufficient opportunities for his or her integral development”.

Stay well

Celebrating Achievement at the Mt Sion Awards

Last week, we were able to acknowledge the academic and co-curricular achievements of our Mt Sion students for 2021. This occasion is a celebration of student achievement in Years 10, 11 and 12 and a chance to reflect on the significant effort that has been made by our students as they persisted through the challenges of remote learning and the impacts of COVID-19.

As we were not able to gather as a full College community, or invite our parents and significant others to the Awards ceremony, we once again streamed the event to our senior classrooms and broader community.

To acknowledge the importance of this event, we would like to share a collective video capturing the spirit of the morning, and we have included a link to the powerfully motivating speech by Old Collegians Todd and George Divine, a must view on inclusivity and diversity and the importance we all can make to each other.

We thank all students who were acknowledged during this ceremony and congratulate them on their achievements and contribution to the life of SJC.

Thank you.

Lent 2022 - For all Future Generations

Next Wednesday 2 March, we will prepare for the beginning of Lent, a time of preparation for the most significant liturgical event on our Church calendar, Easter. In an extended homeroom, we will participate in an Ash Wednesday Liturgy. The theme of Project Compassion 2022 is ‘For All Future Generations’. It is an expression of hope and reminds us that the good that we do today will extend and impact the lives of generations to come. It invites us to make the world a better place by working together now and finding long-term solutions to global issues. As a Catholic school in the Edmund Rice tradition, we are called to reflect the social justice teachings for a hope filled future.

We encourage students to discover the power of giving and the impact that their contribution, however big or small, would have on the lives of others. When we lend a hand to someone in need, they go on to help others and make better opportunities for future generations. Compassion is contagious and creates a ripple effect of kindness and prosperity. We show solidarity with our neighbours in need, near and far, at St Joseph’s College through our generous support of Edmund Rice Day on Friday 13 May. Our Waterford students will take part in a Kindness Challenge in the lead up to Eddie Rice Day. Part of our funds raised on this day go to Caritas Australia and Manya in East Africa to empower young people to build a just future for themselves, their families and their communities.

Our students will be reflecting on how they will challenge themselves to respond with love and hope, now and for all future generations by making three Lenten commitments to that show growth and how they will to contribute positively in the St Joseph’s College/Geelong/National/International community for all future generations. These commitments will be burnt, to create the ashes that will be used to make a cross on a poster in each homeroom. This cross is a sign that we will journey with Jesus and are committed to living out the gospel values.

Service Learning Opportunities

Mac & Joe’s is back!

Students, staff, parents and carers are invited to cook for local palliative care at home patients via the Mac & Joe’s Service Learning Opportunity. Last year Leah Irving our Identity Team’s Service Learning Coordinator, launched a new initiative for our senior students and staff that is truly a living example living out the gospel value of compassion, ‘Mac & Joes – Nourishing Neighbours - Connecting Community’. By cooking meals in the senior kitchen for home delivery to McKellar Centre palliative care patients, their carers and families, students earn 2 House points and 2 hours of Service Learning credit for each session completed. See further details and registration form on the SIMON Student Bulletin.

Sign up to cook for Mac & Joe's: Mac & Joe's Sign up Link

Term 1 dates: Monday 7 March & Monday 28 March.

Our very own Service Learning Coordinator - Leah Irving has been nominated for the category 'Women in Community Life for Education' in the 'Women in Community Life Awards'. We wish her well and hope she is the winning nomination as part of this year's City of Greater Geelong Women in Community Life Awards, featuring special, guest Annabel Crabb. This year's theme is 'Changing Climates: Equality today for a sustainable tomorrow', and is an opportunity to celebrate and recognise women across our community.

Year 8 Father and Son Time and Space Event

We are looking forward to welcoming Bill Jennings back to St Joseph’s to lead our annual Year 8 Time & Space Father/Mentor & Son event on Thursday 17 March 2022, 6.45pm for 7:00pm start, in the Br O.S. Adams Centre (Gym). ‘Stepping Up’ taps the very best resources in our own school community – the dads (or grandfathers, older brothers or uncles) of our boys. See the flyer for details to register to be part of this innovative single evening program that gives a signpost to each boy about the best ways he can ‘step up’ to be a good man.

This is also a popular Service Learning Opportunity for students in Years 9 -12 to join the team to set up and participate in the sessions. Details to sign up for Service Learning will be on the SIMON Student Bulletin.

Mt Sion Awards

Last week, we were able to acknowledge the academic and co-curricular achievements of our Mt Sion students for 2021. This occasion is a celebration of student achievement and a chance to reflect on the significant effort that has been made by our students as they persisted through the challenges of remote learning and the impacts of COVID-19.

Whilst we could not recognise all the students in these awards, we are very proud of their collective results, and the continued success they have after they have left the College. Not only did we have a VCE median higher than the State average, a significant increase in the number of students who achieved above 90 ATARS, but our students were twice more likely to be employed than students from any other College in the Geelong region according to our recent On Track Results.

It was also great to hear about the diverse range of University and TAFE courses the students have been offered, from International Studies, Performing Arts, Business Studies through to Aeronautical Engineering. Congratulations to all involved in the ceremony and the Events team who put this significant event together.

A full photo gallery of the day is available on the College Facebook Page & a video of the event is included in this newsletter edition.

Allwell Testing

Last week our Year 7 students participated in an extensive written test delivered by Academic Assessment Services which covers the areas of Reading, Writing, Numeracy, and Reasoning. The College uses the data from this testing to profile our students to support their learning, as well as track student progress at specific times in their schooling e.g., Year 8 and Year 10. This not only helps us to continue to identify ways we can support our students but also track the impact of the curriculum and programs we deliver at the College. The Year 7 students did an excellent job completing these tests in the gym, and our Year 8 and Year 10 students are scheduled to sit these tests later in the year. Thank you to Vin Brown and Rebecca Barker for the coordination of these tests.

Assessment and Mid Semester Reports

All Assessment results will be made available to parents through continuous reporting cycles in PAM. This year the Curriculum Team has made some modifications to our comments, directing our feedback to the students in the reporting of results, whilst making this feedback accessible to parents to read. Mid Semester reports will provide a snapshot of your child’s learning dispositions across the following areas:

  • Completes all learning tasks including homework
  • Completes all learning tasks including homework
  • Works collaboratively with others
  • Takes ownership and responsibility for their learning
  • Actively seeks feedback for improvement in their learning

Mid semester reports will be made available to parents 31 March.

Changes to the GAT in 2022

This year the Government announced significant changes to the GAT, which previously had been completed by students sitting a VCE Unit 3-4 sequence. In 2022, the GAT date has been moved to Wednesday 7 September and has undergone some significant changes as part of the move towards the new senior secondary certificate.

As part of the reform of the VCE and VCAL system, Victorian senior secondary students will this year have their literacy and numeracy skills measured against new standards in a reformed GAT. The new standards will indicate whether students have demonstrated the literacy and numeracy skills typically expected of someone completing their secondary schooling – giving another indication of their readiness to move onto further education, training or employment.

Whilst more information will be provided regarding the process it is important that families of students who are in Year 12 completing VCE (score /unscored) or VCAL will be required to sit at least one component of this test, which is divided into 2 sections:

  • Sections A will assess literacy and numeracy skills
  • Section B will assess skills, in mathematics, science, technology, arts and humanities with an increased focus in critical and creative thinking.

For our Year 10 and 11 students enrolled in one or more VCE or scored VCE VET Unit 3–4 sequence, they will be expected to sit Sections A and B of the GAT. Students enrolled in Senior VCAL will be expected to sit Section A only. If students are enrolled in Senior VCAL as well as one or more VCE or scored VCE VET Unit 3–4 sequence, they will be expected to sit Sections A and B.

Student Leadership News

Mr Tom Darley kindly visited our 2022 senior Student Leaders at lunchtime last week, to share his expert knowledge of public speaking. The information was practical and helpful for students, to encourage success in future presentations, often led by the student leaders. We would like to express our sincere thanks to Mr Darley for all of his time and effort, in preparing and presenting to this eager student audience.

Mr Crook and Mrs Coogan SJC Student Leadership Coordinators

Students:

Mr Darley came to speak to a group of boys as well as staff, about public speaking. He provided some great tips and tricks on how to speak well and capture the audience. From the simplest things, such as taking a breath before you begin, to how you present yourself on stage. Personally, I know that I will be using all of these lessons long into the future. TAKE 3 FOR THE SEA LAUNCH

It has been wonderful to witness the enthusiasm of so many students at Westcourt and Edmund Rice Campus alike, to demonstrate their support of the “TAKE 3” initiative. During lunchtime on Friday 18 February (Edmund Rice Campus) and again on Monday 21 February (Westcourt), students took to the yard with great gusto and willingly queued to get “caught on camera TAKING 3”, by picking up three pieces of rubbish from the yard, securing a muffin reward for their efforts.

I would like to thank Bryce G (Year 8) Tommy L (Year 9) and Callum W (Year 9) for their support in launching this initiative for 2022.

“Today we launched Take 3 For the Sea at Westcourt. You might not know what Take 3 For the Sea is, or why it’s so important. The initiative was founded by three scientists, with the aim to eradicate plastic pollution in the ocean. All it involves is picking up three pieces of rubbish and putting them in the bin, so that they can’t find their way into the sea and kill marine wildlife. The founders hope that by everybody taking small actions, we can all improve the world”.

Callum - (Year 9)

It was enjoyable volunteering for Take 3 for the Sea, because I know that being able to lend a hand in this event would promise that the rubbish that could be in the sea would be properly disposed of instead. Any amount of rubbish, big or small, is a contribution to helping out the sea and the environment.

Tommy - (Year 9)

"TAKE 3" FILMING COMPETITION

The TAKE 3 Challenge for 2022 is now running for all year levels. Entries should be submitted to Ms Kelly Jenkins at; [email protected] by the end of the day on Friday 1 April.

News from the Music Department
Article by Amy Young
Director of Music

Thanks to all the young musicians in the SJC senior band, and to their conductor Mr John Collinson, for their wonderful performance at our music information night on Tuesday 15 February. After only two rehearsals, the band played beautifully and represented the music program with pride. We are extremely fortunate to have a well-resourced and supported music program at SJC that provides amazing opportunities to the students.

Missed the Music information night and keen to know more about the amazing music program at St Joseph's? Our Junior Band Academy is open to all students learning a new instrument for the first time from any year level. We still have vacancies on brass (trumpet/trombone/tuba) and woodwind (Sax/clarinet/flute), along with percussion and bass guitar with excellent quality instruments for hire as a part of the program. The junior band academy rehearses Wednesdays from 3:30-5:00pm with expert experienced tutors for each instrument.

Please get in touch with our music administrator, Laura Martin on [email protected] or director of Music, Amy Young [email protected] for more information.

A Headstart for 3D Art
Article by Laura Martin
Visual Arts

During Headstart, year 8 3D Art students were given a ‘taster’ class in working with clay. Students were tasked with constructing a slab built planter using a cylinder pipe as a mould and creating a monster face on the outside. After firing the clay, students could paint their ceramics with underglaze to colour it and it was then dipped in a clear gloss and fired for the finished product. This artwork provides the opportunity to learn ceramic making techniques such as slab rolling, score-slip-smooth joining, and hand moulding while building on fine motor skills. Students now understand how the material works which will help inform and plan their sculptures this semester.
