Principal's Video & Blog - Issue 14
Article by Tony Paatsch
College Principal

Bill Bryson is a travel writer. In his book ‘Down Under’ there is a lovely line where Bill is being given advice about how to avoid Australia’s venomous snakes while bushwalking. He is told “most snakes don’t want to hurt you, if you’re out of the bush and a snake comes along just stop dead let it slide over your shoes’. Bill describes this as “the least likely to be followed advice I had ever been given”.

The experts in coping with grief emphasise the benefits of returning to normality as quickly as possible following a tragedy. We could interpret this as similar to the advice given to Bill if we think it means ‘just go about your business and pretend that nothing happened’. But of course, it doesn’t. If it did then it would be right up there with ‘least likely to be followed advice’, because it is just not possible. When understood correctly, the advice is about the therapeutic value of routine and the comfort of returning to what we know and can control. This week we have been back in the virtual classroom with the soothing rhythm of the school day. Things will never be exactly as they were before but we will be ok.

There are no silver linings to the loss of a young life. It has however, been a privilege to watch the support that people in this remarkable community have provided for each other. In saying this I particularly note the support for each other from our young people. The College staff and leadership team have also felt enormously supported by the outpouring of appreciation, affirmation and support for the work we are doing with our students.

I would also like to acknowledge the exceptional support our community has received from other schools and community organisations. We have also welcomed the guidance provided by the panel of experts who make up the Geelong Youth Suicide Protocol Group in particular the staff from headspace.

We are a community of faith and at present, that faith is being sorely tested. In the face of grief and loss, it can be difficult to find God. In the last week, there have been many prayers for Jordan, his family, his friends, his community, and for us. I hope you might find some additional solace you the following poem called, I looked for God’s face.

I looked for God in darkness

I looked for God in daytime

I looked for God in the night

I saw the velvet blackness

I saw the clear bright sky

I saw the people’s faces

I saw them passing by

I saw them suffer asking why,

I saw them love and laugh and cry

I saw them live, I saw them die –

I saw God’s face.

Stay well and God Bless

These are difficult times indeed for our College Community. The death of any teen is tragic, made especially difficult that we are in remote learning. It is during this time that we must go gently with each other, to reach out and to say kind and loving words.

As we are unable to attend Church, where many find comfort in reflection and prayer as well as the opportunity to grieve the loss of loved ones, you may like to run a small prayer service at home. The service (below) may help you find the strength to support each other; as well as ensure hope, compassion and love continues to radiate through our school community All that is required is a candle, and a quiet and reflective space.

We gather together as a family to remember Jordan Rosewarne.

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.

We light a candle for Jordan Ty Rosewarne, a gentle loving soul who is now at peace. We remember Jordan’s family; his mum Stacey, his dad Adam, his sister Amber and all of his extended family. Help them through this most difficult time. May the love and support of family, friends and the St Joseph’s College community give them comfort in their time of loss.

A READING from the Gospel of John 14:1-4

Jesus Comforts His Disciples

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.”

This is the Word of the Lord

All: Thanks Be to God

The Gospel passage we just heard is not only about life after death, but is a passage that has everything to do with our lives here and now. Jesus calls us back to this fundamental relationship of trust and assures us he is not abandoning us. There is no need to panic, no need to search desperately for a secret map. Jesus promises to be with us through the power of the Spirit. This does not necessarily happen in easily visible, spectacular ways. Yet wherever there is healing, reconciling, and life-giving work this is the work of God. Wherever there is life in abundance, this is Jesus’ presence in our midst.

Prayer litany

God our Creator, you give breath to each person you made.

You treasure the gifts of each unique person.

But when life becomes a burden rather than a gift,

ALL: God of life, hold us.

When darkness encroaches, when days become endless nights,

ALL: God of light, shine on us.

When no one seems to understand, when we walk and wait alone,

ALL: God of love, embrace us with your presence.

Where there is despair, bring hope; where there is shame, give value and worth;

where there is emptiness, bring fulfillment; where there is suffering in mind and

body, bring healing.

ALL: God of hope, hear our prayer for life.

Reader 4

Closing Prayer

Lord of all gentleness, surround us with your care and comfort us in our sorrow as we grieve for the loss of Jordan. Stand with us in all our sorrows and difficulties, knowing there is always people to listen to us. Words can have a profound effect on us. Words can bring a moment of comfort and support. They can give us courage and strength and help us through difficult times. May we like your Son Jesus, Mary MacKillop and Edmund Rice respond with faith and courage in the weeks ahead. Help us to support one another through this time as a compassionate St Joseph’s community.

We ask this through Christ our Lord. AMEN

In the Name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, Amen.

Upstart Express - inspiring ideas!
Article by Koren Irving

St Joseph’s College Geelong has a proud history of involvement with UpStart that dates back to 2012. This year, eleven very talented Year 8 students, took part in the UpStart Express Challenge. Different to past challenges, this year’s Express Challenge consisted of students partaking in a week-long intensive entrepreneurial journey during Science Week – exploring an idea from problem to impact. Students investigated how a problem affects people, imagined ways to solve it, developed a model for how to bring their solution idea to life, and then developed and communicated their vision to a group of Foundation members in the form of a pitch. All three teams were incredibly successful, gaining high praise from the Foundation judges.

Team one consisted of Jaylen S, Hieu V and Edward J decided to focus their talents on addressing issues of equality in our community, developing an all-terrain beach wheelchair that would provide uses with the ability to engage in play at the beach while being supported by a harnessed seat. Team two, Connor O, Tommy L, Kade H and Noah B developed an app called ‘Wake’ that would wake you up with soothing tones or motivational comments in the morning but would only turn off once you moved out of the sensor range. This addressed the problem of pressing snooze multiple times and waking up feeling unrested. The third team, Felix P, Brodie E, Ranura J and Cian G tackled the issue of remote and hybrid learning proposing a new learning management system SAM (the child of PAM) which integrated all assignments, learning hubs, and classwork into the one system for students, streamlining the experience of remote learning for students.

All teams addressed real-world problems and undertook extensive customer research before developing their solutions. They then each had the opportunity to meet with an industry professional who helped to mentor the team through the process. A big thank you is extended to our judging panel, Foundation members Lucy Dripps and Warick Brown who gave up their time to provide the students with a real-world audience to pitch to, beyond their peers. Their highlights included:

  • You each played to your strengths – it was great to see that you were able to work so well together.
  • You presented a very united front, wearing the school uniform well and with pride.
  • It was wonderful to hear that you really care about equality in our world and making sure everyone has equal access to life’s experiences.
  • Your level of research was impressive. You definitely had a good understanding of the problem with research to back this up.

Congratulations to all eleven students who now have the opportunity to enter their pitches formally for the chance to represent St Joseph’s College Geelong at the National Showcase.

Zart Art Competition Winner!
Article by Laura Martin
Visual Arts Technician

Last semester, Year 8 student Charlie B painted an Impressionist-style painting as part of the 2D Art – Colour Explosion subject. Charlie chose to paint a landscape of blue skies and rolling waves of the beach, a scene we are all familiar with, living close to the coast. Using a photograph as a reference, the image had to include a strong sense of tone and colour to be interpreted into an Impressionist style, depicting a landscape made up of visible brushstrokes. The artwork was first mapped out on a canvas with graphite pencil and then painted with acrylic paint using a variety of brushes. Paint application techniques included dabbing, stippling, short, thick, and quick brushstrokes which aim to emphasise the light and movement of waves crashing and clouds slowly floating across the sky.

Charlie’s artwork was submitted to the Zart Art National Student Art Prize. The online exhibition and competition’s theme was OUR CELEBRATION OF AUSTRALIA which could be interpreted in any art form. Approximately 4,000 students submitted in 6 categories, ranging from early primary school, through to Year 12 in secondary schooling. Charlie won first place in his category for the People’s Choice Award, receiving a $250 Zart Art & Craft Voucher. Congratulations to Charlie for his achievement!

ATOM Front Page News Competition
Article by Thomas Darley

Throughout Terms 2 and 3 aspiring journalists, artists and photographers across Year 7 and 8 regularly met to design their very own St Joseph’s Newspaper to submit in the Australian Front Page News Competition. The Front Page News competition is an initiative of Channel Nine and Australian Teachers of Media (ATOM). It provides Australian schools and classes with the chance to create their own newspaper of the future. Students brainstormed articles and issues about the school that mattered most to them. These articles ranged from remote learning, the future of learning and SJC, transitioning to high school, environmental issues and Diversity week. The junior news team sought out school leaders and experts for interviews to find the inside scoop around SJC. Students utilised QR codes, virtual links and graphic design to help build what they thought to be a Newspaper of the future. Giving up many of their lunchtimes, the junior news team worked tirelessly to bring all their articles together; even working and compiling data in the numerous lockdowns. The students loved having their voices heard about issues around the school and will find out the results of the competition on 10 November. I would like to thank and congratulate the junior news team on all their hard work and persistence with the SJC Chronicle.

(Year 8: Erik M, Daniel D, Callum W, Connor O, Felix P and Kai D)

(Year 7: Thomas B, Thomas Q, Archie K, Jake Z, Tàigh R and Hamish F).

ACC Public Speaking
Article by Jaeger F
Year 10

On Wednesday 18 August, Year 10 public speaking students Jaeger, Colby, Xavier and Samuel competed in the ACC public speaking competition, against a range of students from Catholic schools in Victoria.

Hosted on zoom, the format of the event consisted of two 3-4-minute prepared speeches on any issue the student chooses. The speeches were marked with a clap at 3 minutes and a final clap at 4 minutes. In the first round, Colby delivered a speech on the genetic modification of embryos and the perception of perfection that can never truly be achieved and Jaeger, ambition in world leaders, and that very ambition leading to their downfall. Xavier spoke to advertising and the dangerous tactics marketing teams use to convince the consumer and the immoral future that they could bring. To close the first round, Sam delivered his first speech on COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy.

Year 10 student Patrick Reed wrote both speeches Samuel delivered but fell ill the day before the competition. Samuel stood in and performed Patrick’s speeches with distinction in a collaborative effort from the students. Topics from fellow competitors from a range of ACC schools included copyright laws, procrastination, COVID-19 restrictions, the immorality of large corporations and a range of other important issues and subjects. Following the first round of prepared speeches, the second prepared speech round began. In his second speech, Colby delivered a riveting address on transparency of government and subsequent silencing of whistle-blowers. Jaeger explored the truth behind the infamous dismissal of Prime Minister Gough Whitlam. Xavier proposed the disastrous implications of genetically editing foetuses and the ethical dilemma it provides, through a case study.

Finally, Samuel investigated the state of inherent political polarization plaguing the United States and the possibility of its replication in Australia. By a large margin, St Joseph’s College achieved victory, taking home the ACC public speaking flag for 2021. The adjudicators commended the team on the quality of prepared speeches and provided valuable feedback to assist in future events. Colby, Xavier, Samuel, Patrick and I would like to extend a massive thank you to Mr Darley for organising this event for us and for assisting us immeasurably in the formation and editing of our speeches in preparation for the competition.
