Music department news

These past few weeks have been very productive and exciting in the music department. 11 May saw us visit Kardinia International College with our intermediate band for the annual Geelong Region Combined Bands Day. More than 40 SJC students were involved in this event where they were privileged to work with Dr Jemima Bunn on two pieces for the combined band. 206 young musicians were involved all up and they made a mighty sound together! Thanks to all the students and teachers involved with what was a very successful and exciting day of music making for all involved.

18 May was an exceptionally musical day for SJC students. Starting with our saxophone and guitar ensembles performing at the Probus Geelong 30th anniversary lunch at Barwon Edge. A special thanks to the students involved and Mr Cassidy and Mr Adam Wilkie for preparing the students for this performance and supporting them at this performance. Later that same day, our Autumn concert involved all the college ensembles. Each ensemble showcased a diverse range of music that they had been rehearsing during the term. Drumline opened the show with great excitement and created a wonderful sense of expectation for the rest of the evening. This was the Junior Academy Band’s debut public performance after approximately one full term worth of lessons and rehearsals and what a debut it was! It was exciting to hear the future of the SJC music program coming from this group. We were able to present the Mathew Shelley award for commitment and dedication to the music program to 2022 Alumni, Elijah Van Galen and it was wonderful to have Elijah back at this concert as a guest.

Upcoming events include 7 June Class Act concert at 6pm in the PAC which involves all year 7 band classes and year 8 band classes showcasing what they have learnt this semester. Unit 3 VCE music recitals will happen in week 8.

Term 3 has plenty of musical events in the works, including the Senior and Stage band tour to Phillip Island, Royal South Street competition, Victorian Schools Music Festival and finishing off with the Arts Hall of Fame Launch.

Stay tuned for more exciting music news to come!
