September 2009 Br OS Adams Centre Re Development Update

Work is well underway for the re-development and extension of the Br OS Adams Centre.
The Building Group Chargold, given the task of redeveloping the St Joseph’s College
Landmark, have put into place footings and support structures for what will become a
state of the art facility for our students.

Upon completion the Br OS Adams Centre - elevated above Carey Oval will be
transformed into a multi-level, multi-purpose facility.
The building will provide an extensive Health and Physical Education area
incorporating two full size basketball courts and stadium seating for approximately
800 people.The re-development will provide the College with a multi-purpose
area which will not only be used for Health and Physical Education,
but for full school assemblies, school masses, ceremonies and other
formal gatherings for the entire school. The facility is much needed as we
currently do not have the capacity to gather as one, indoors.

Conservation Strategy

Debate about global warming and closer to home, the current drought, have prompted a push toward the sustainable use of water, waste and energy in homes and institutions. The College’s Building and Maintenance Planning Committee has recognised the need for our school to not only save energy but also to promote a conservation strategy in its current and future building and maintenance programs.

An immediate response has been to harvest water to flush toilets and to water trees and gardens. Many will have noticed the installation of water tanks around the school over the past twelve months. Less visible have been the installation of light sensors in classrooms and offices and the use of more efficiently designed sun shading and ventilation in new buildings. The next step is a full energy audit of the school to:

  • determine how much energy is currently being used and for what purpose,
  • identify building, structural and other design initiatives, including retrofit and future construction, which the College could implement over time,
  • identify short and long term strategies to be implemented within the College community to raise awareness.
