Principal's Report
16-May-2013
Dear Parents, Students and Friends of the College,
It was good to be in attendance at our annual Mother’s Day Mass last Friday. Thank you to all of the mums and other significant female role models who attended. I hope you all enjoyed Mother’s Day on Sunday. It was good to see such strong parental support at the first Westcourt Parents Forum which was held in the PAC on Monday evening. Planning for the Year 9 Campus is well underway and our gathering on Monday evening was a good indication of the parental support necessary to make the Campus a success.  For those parents who were unable to attend the evening, there is a document available for download on the College website that addresses some common questions regarding the Westcourt Campus - Westcourt Year 9 Campus FAQ
Set out below is a project we have decided to support with some of the walkathon proceeds from Edmund Rice Day.
UGANDA PROJECT - KIZIBA
Towards the end of the 2013 school year a group of Year 12 students will be travelling to Uganda to involve themselves with the local community of Manya. As a consequence of connections with St Bernard’s Belmont Parish and the Cotton On Foundation this annual trip in place of ‘Schoolies’ provides our students with a wonderful immersion opportunity.
The development of Manya has been happening since 2004 and much as been achieved.
Kiziba is an adjoining village about 25k East of Manya and Br Russell Peters who recently visited the village with Fr Nestus from Manya described the place as “in desperate need”. St Joseph’s has received a request via Fr Nestus to provide financial assistance for the construction of a multi purpose building that can be used as a community meeting place. Some of the possible uses include a centre where hygiene and HIV education can take place and where Mass can be celebrated.
It is estimated that the cost of this centre would be $10,000. I think this is a worthy first project for some of the money raised on Edmund Rice Day. The rainwater from the roof will be harvested into an underground tank. Br Russell intends to approach the Australian High Commission in Nairobi to request that a bore be sunk to provide the villagers with fresh water. These two initiatives follow consultation with the local people to determine projects which would be of maximum benefit for the region. There is a parish priest in the village and Fr Nestus will work with him to ensure that the project becomes a reality.
My purpose in writing to you as parents about this is to thank you for the generous way you supported the fundraising which took place on Edmund Rice Day. Hopefully the students taking part in the Uganda Immersion at the end of the year can pay a visit.
