Age Champions are awarded in the following sports
Under 13 to Senior in athletics, swimming and
cross-country
Best & Fairest, Runner-Up and Coaches Award are
given for the following:
Senior football cricket soccer and interschool cricket
Zampatti All Rounder
This award is sponsored
by long serving staff members and supporters of the College, Maureen and
Russell Zampatti.
It recognizes student
participation, academic, sporting and service activities. The winner would have shown exemplary conduct and displayed the school spirit at every opportunity.
College Classic
Awarded to the winner of a handicapped race over 1500 m. All students can compete and are handicapped based on their age group.
Edmund Rice Gift
Awarded to the winner of a handicapped race over 100 m. The fastest 100 m runner from each age group is chosen and handicap is based on age group.
Old Collegians Association – Leo Turner Memorial
Award
For excellence in sport
This is presented each year by the St Joseph’s College Old Collegians
Association to the outstanding sportsman of the year. The award was donated by the Turner family in
memory of Leo Turner, who was a student at St Joseph’s from 1938 to 1945. Leo excelled
in all sports and was a great role model for the younger students. He really
excelled in football and was captain of the undefeated team of 1945. He went on
to play VFL football with Geelong from 1947 to
1954 playing 130 games and 13 for Victoria.
Leo was a devoted family man, a successful businessman and a highly regarded
citizen.
Below are examples of past recipients and the introduction they received during the awards ceremony:
- 2007 Nic Spence – Baseball - Nic is a batter who
has competed in the Australian National Championships as a member of the
Victorian team in all age groups from 2002 to 2007. He was captain of the
Victorian Team in 2003 & 2007 and a member of the Australian Champion team
of 2005. He has completed scholarship programs at the Victorian Institute of Sport & Major League Baseball Academy
on the Gold Coast. In August 2008 Nic will move to America
to commence a scholarship with Central
Arizona College,
where he will follow in his brother Josh’s footsteps.
- 2006 Matthew Spiranovic – Soccer - Matt attended St Joseph’s until Year 11 and in 2006 was awarded a full
time scholarship at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra. Matt has represented Australia at Under 17 level and as a member of
the National Under 19 team, which has just completed Youth World Cup qualifying
rounds in India.
He has recently accepted a 3 year contract with Nuremberg Football Club in the
European Bundasleague and is currently living in Germany.
- 2005 Joshua Spence – Baseball - Josh has completed
scholarships at the baseball Academy in Queensland and the Victorian Institute
of Sport and has returned this week from America where he will take up a
College scholarship.
- 2004 Matt Ryan – Baseball - Matt is in a unique
group of Australian athletes. He is a baseballer who has represented Australia at
junior level and has recently been signed to a major league contract with the
Anaheim Angels. Matt commences his career in the United States in March 2005.
