Sport in the curriculum
Students in Years 7 – 11 have 2 periods each week
where they participate in physical activity by learning skills and playing
sport. Some specific subject choices allow students to have more involvement in
sports as part of their learning program.
Weekend sport
The school has no
organised sport on weekends and students are able to join any of the local
clubs should they wish to play sport on weekends. However,
the school does have strong links with both St. Joseph’s
Football Club and St. Joseph’s
Cricket Club. Many players at these clubs are both past and present St. Joseph’s College
students.
The origin of each club is that they were established for St. Joseph’s Old Boys as
a means of maintaining connections and sporting affiliations beyond secondary
schooling at the College. Today, these clubs also provide an excellent
opportunity for current students to enjoy and experience similar connections
with their school friends whilst still attending school. Both clubs have Junior
Co-ordinators who link closely to the school in their roles.
In addition,
the cricket club offers ‘Milo cricket’ and the
football club provides ‘Auskick’. Each of these programs provides wonderful
learning and coaching opportunities for primary aged boys. Many boys
participating in these programs go on to join the older junior ranks of St.
Joseph’s cricket and football clubs, as well as enrolling at St. Joseph’s
College.
In addition, St. Joseph’s College runs its own Joey’s Little League for boys aged 8-12
years. Joey’s is affiliated with the
Newtown Little League and most boys playing for Joey’s come from local Catholic Primary schools. Similarly, the
majority of boys playing with Joey’s
ultimately go on to become students at the College and players at St. Joseph’s Football
Club.
