Instrumental Music Program
Aim:
The Instrumental Music Program aims to provide further opportunities for students in practical music. Instrumental music will emphasise performance skills, musical understanding, perceptive listening and positive attitudes. A commitment to regular practice and attendance at rehearsals is expected.
Students taking private lessons at the school and hiring SJC instruments are expected to fully participate in the Band Program as required.
Instrumental Tuition
There will be a limit on instruments and lessons available.
Tuition is offered in the following areas:
- Brass Trumpet, Eb Bass, Trombone, Euphonium
- Guitar Classical, Jazz or Modern, Students must have their own guitar
- Percussion Drum Kit, Mallet Percussion
- Piano Modern or Classical - Keyboard/Midi, Individual Tuition only
- Strings Violin, Viola, Cello
- Theory Individual/Group
- Voice Individual/Group
- Woodwind Saxophone (Alto, Tenor, Baritone), Clarinet, Flute, Oboe, Bassoon
Availability of Instrument of choice should be discussed with the Music Co-ordinator, prior to enrolment.
Tuition Fees
Accounts will be issued directly by the contract Music tutor and are payable in advance. Lessons will be terminated if fees are not paid. Fees are paid directly to the tutor.
Group lessons may be available by special arrangement.
Please enquire at the Music Office if you are interested in group lessons. To accelerate progress Individual lessons are advisable after the first two years of learning.
Lessons
Lessons are timetabled on a rotating basis, so that students will not miss the same
class each week. A written report outlining progress will be issued at the end of each
semester. Lessons are generally undertaken for a full year. If lessons are terminated, one
terms written notice must be given. All enquiries regarding lesson times are to be
directed to the Music Assistant.
AMEB/ANSCA Examinations
Students are encouraged to sit for AMEB or ANSCA examinations in Theory and/or Practical.
Prescribed fees for these examinations are to be paid in advance.
Instrumental Hire
Brass and Woodwind Instruments may be hired for an initial period of twelve months, with a maximum of 2 years. Preference will be given to beginners.
A Hire Contract is required before instruments can be taken home.
Ensembles
The Ensembles at St Joseph's College are:
- Junior Concert Band
- Intermediate Concert Band
- Senior Concert Band
- Jazz Band, Clarinet Ensemble
- Vocal Ensemble
- Saxophone Ensemble
- Percussion Ensemble
- Strings Ensemble.
Students undertaking tuition at St. Joseph’s are expected to participate in the Junior or Senior School Concert Band, once they have achieved an acceptable standard of performance. The Jazz Band is an opportunity for extending playing experiences for those alreaddy committed to the Senior Band. Regular attendance at weekly rehearsals is expected, so as to maintain and develop high standards of musical performance.
Group work provides a stimulus for the student, teaches him the techniques of playing in time and in tune with others, and exposes him to a wide range of musical influences.
Attendance will be recorded and a review will be held at the end of each term. Parents will be informed if attendance or progress is not satisfactory.
Public Performance
Students perform at Geelong and Melbourne Music Festivals, the Geelong Eisteddfod, school assemblies, competitions and other functions within the local community. There are also opportunities for students to participate in music camps and tours.
