STUDENTS APPROPRIATE COMPUTER USE POLICY
The Use of College Computers and College Network and the Internet
These services have been established for educational purposes, consistent with the academic expectations of the School.
Computer Rooms

The library computers are available between 8.00am and 4.30pm
-
C38 is open at lunchtime for work only and C37 is available at lunchtime for general use.

During lesson times, students must first take a permission note and go to the library. If this is fully occupied, they can then ask permission of a teacher in a computer room.

Printing – Print credit is updated each Semester. More credit can be purchased through the Front Office.

B & W printing is available in all computer labs and colour printing is also available in the library and Art/Graphics and Woodwork rooms

Internet – Internet credit is updated each Month. More credit can be purchased through the Front Office.
CLEAR BASIC WARNINGS
The following will result in 2 points for every occurrence and locking of computer access for 2 weeks. (See the full policy below)
- Playing games on computers
- Using programs or playing games/music/videos/etc from USB memory sticks (or other devices)
- Plugging any device, other than simple USB memory sticks, into school computers – all other devices like iPods, mp3 players, etc will be confiscated. Only specialist teachers can supervise the use of other devices
- The presence of any non-schoolwork material (e.g. games, mp3 files, videos, programs, photos, etc) saved in a student’s H drive
- Loading or installing anything onto computers
- Using someone else’s account
- Allowing someone else to use your account
Emails are automatically checked by computer programs for inappropriate words and attachments. This might cause some emails to be re-directed to computer admin staff.
Computer programs automatically filter Internet sites. You may politely request the unblocking of a site if the site is required for schoolwork.
Correct Use
Students should:

Maintain the privacy of their own passwords – a student will be held responsible for any use of his user name and password unless he can identify the person who has used his account.

Backup all files regularly – the school is not responsible for lost files. Use a USB memory stick only.

Only save school related files in their network drive (H: Drive)

Be polite and use appropriate language when emailing

Correctly acknowledge other people’s work in accordance with copyright laws

Inform a teacher of anything considered inappropriate

Handle all equipment with care

Personal Internet browsing and e-mail use should be conducted at home
Incorrect Use
Students must not:
- Plug in any device to school computers other than a simple USB memory stick unless a specialist staff member gives permission.
- Save any non-schoolwork material (e.g. games, mp3 files, videos, programs, photos, etc) onto the network – special permission is required from your teacher to have this material on the network if required for schoolwork
- Use another student’s account or let another student use your account
- Bring to school via any device or e-mail, any games or other software or any material that is inappropriate or offensive.
- Damage the hardware or interfere with the software or settings of any computer
- Use the Internet to attempt to access offensive or inappropriate information.
- Access or interfere with other students’ and staff members’ email and/or files.
- Download any material from the Internet unless instructed by your teacher.
- Send a network message
- Join any List Serve email services unless approved by a teacher
- Cause any unsolicited e-mail to be sent to another person’s e-mail address
- Send a message with someone else’s name or a false name.
- Send a message that is inconsistent with the school’s code of conduct and standards.
- Send a personal email during lesson time, that is of a private nature or unrelated to schoolwork
Consequences

Loss of computer privileges.

Points leading to a detention.

Notification of Deputy Principal/Principal.

Notification of parents.

Suspension
Inappropriate Material
Unless required by a particular educational context, the following are to be considered inappropriate or offensive:

Gambling sites
-
Games or game sites
-
Nudity
-
Sexually explicit or suggestive material
-
Material relating to violence
-
Material that is discriminatory or offensive to a person’s nature or to a particular social group. This can include: physical, intellectual, emotional aspects; religious beliefs; race; gender and gender preference.
Language that is generally considered obscene or blasphemous
STUDENT USE OF LAPTOPS OR PDA’s
No student is allowed to bring these to school unless:
- A physical or diagnosed intellectual impairment requires the use of such
- There are exceptional program requirements for a particular class

If these are required at school the student must first gain permission from the Director of ICT.

A permission note will be issued which must be carried with the device.

The school maintains the right to inspect the information stored on the personal laptop. Such an inspection will occur in the presence of the student, a Deputy Principal and a Computer Technical Staff member.
Security of Laptops at School

Personal laptops must be stored in the student’s locker at all times other than the class for which it has been brought.

The school does not accept any responsibility for damage or theft of the student’s personal laptop.

School laptops must be locked away during storage and may be left in the student’s locker, with the AV Coordinator in the library, at the front office or with a teacher if they agree.
The student must:

Receive a permission form from the Director of ICT
-
Use the laptop only for the purposes discussed with the Director of ICT

Be totally responsible for its security
-
Not use it for anything other than the class(es) allowed
-
Not use it outside class time
-
Not lend it to others
-
Not connect it to the school network
Use of the Laptop
Personal Laptops
-
Should material from a personal laptop need to be placed onto the network, the student must take the laptop to the IT Administration Office and ask for this to be done by the Computer Technical Staff.

Personal laptops may only be recharged during the designated lesson if required.
School Laptops
-
School laptops may be connected to the school network.
-
No programs or inappropriate material are allowed to be loaded onto the school laptops.

School laptops may be recharged in a classroom during a lesson if allowed by the teacher.
Penalties for Misuse
Confiscation of the laptop and return of the laptop will occur only through consultation with the parents of the student.
Removal of privilege to bring laptop to school
USE OF COMPUTER STORAGE DEVICES
The use of multi-functional storage devices such as handheld computers/PDAs/iPods/USB keys/mp3 players, etc.
Guidelines on the Use of Computer Storage Devices

Storage devices such as floppy discs and USB memory sticks can be used to store and transfer files to or from school computers.

Mp3 devices, PDA’s, iPods, mobile phones and other storage devices must not be used to transfer files to or from school computers unless supervised by specialist teachers.

No devices may be used to listen to music, watch videos, send messages or play games within the school. The penalty for this will be confiscation of the device.
Some USB Keys will be available for student overnight loan through the library

Physical security will be the student’s responsibility
A school standard USB key will be placed onto the booklists
