St Joseph’s College on Newtown Hill in Geelong is the only Catholic senior secondary
boys school in the city. The College was established in its present form in 1935 by the
Christian Brothers, whose founder, Edmund Rice, enjoined the Brothers to minister to
and educate the poor, in the belief that education could turn even the most impoverished
student into a productive and compassionate member of society. Throughout its existence
St Joseph’s College has tried to be faithful to that vision while adapting to the changing
conditions in the world around it.
This history tries to capture the spirit of the staff and students of St Joseph’s College
which enabled the school to overcome many obstacles and become a leader in its region.
It seeks to identify the special characteristics of the school as it evolved and to reveal the
continuities in its vision and practice as it met a series of challenges, external as well as
internal, over the years of its modern foundation.
Copies of the book can be obtained from the College at a cost of $35.00 plus $10.00
postage and handling.
